I purchased the same spatula in a different color, (Carribean), and was excited to find a spatula w/a heat tolerance to 800 degrees F, as the highest I have found is 500 degrees F, which isn't always enough.
Unfortunately, when I received the spatula-spoon, the sticker on the handle stated it was only heatproof to 482 degrees F.
As even spatulas with a heat tolerance of 500 degrees can melt or fray, (I know this from personal experience), a spatula with a heat tolerance of 482 degrees is not helpful.
I suggest the description be corrected. When I saw the 800 degree tolerance, I thought it was too good to be true, and I was unfortunately correct. This was a waste of time and postage.

I recently received this utensil and haven't used it yet. I noticed the head is loose and easily pulls off. The head was meant to be removable for cleaning, but it is too loose.
If I can pull it off so easily, it stands to reason that if it is stuck in mashed potatoes, it will come off in the pot.
I have not washed this in a dishwasher. I only wash things by hand. I don't know why it is loose, except it appears it was manufactured that way.
UPDATE Aug. 28 2009: Le Creuset is sending me a replacement. I will let you know if the head is properly attached when I receive it.
UPDATE Sept. 4 2009: I received the replacement from Le Creuset. The head on this one is definitely tighter. My plan is to disturb the head as little as possible by not ever removing it. A couple of stray pieces of silicone are right where the head meets the bamboo. So there is no "perfect edge" like I would get with the Le Creuset spatulas with nonremovable heads. I could try to cut them off with a utility knife, but I have chosen to leave them intact. I don't want to risk removing any stray pieces of silicone that, in the process of removing them, might somehow cause the head to loosen, so I am going to leave it as is.
NOTE: If you are looking for a less expensive spatula set, one with plastic handles, consider the Wilton Easy Flex Silicone Spatula 3 Piece Set. It was not for me, because the handles felt too small and it is not as eco-friendly, but the Wilton spatula spoon has a permanently attached head.
Pros:
* Beautiful Black Onyx color
* Eco-friendly bamboo handles
* Medium-to-shallow depth spoon shape very utilitarian for many kitchen tasks
* Will not scratch your stainless steel cookware
* Heat resistant up to 800 degrees Farenheit
Cons:
* Removable head (which may be a plus for some people) overly loose on some of the individual spoons; check yours when you receive it. While some people will appreciate that the head is removable, you don't want it to come off too easily.
* Possible "stray" pieces of silicone around head may mean it won't look as neat and precise as Le Creuset silicone utensils with nonremovable heads
Personally, I would handwash these. Never soak them for an extended period of time, as wood will swell and it is not good for them.
Overall, a beautiful Black Onyx utensil by Le Creuset. Just double-check that the head is on nice and tight. I have really enjoyed using this one. I would change the rating to 4 stars since the head on the replacement is tighter.
